Each month inside Burn Club, members take on a theme and burn it their way. There are no rules about technique, no skill level requirements: just a theme, a deadline, and a community of people showing up to make something.

August’s theme was ENTWINED

and the winner is…

JDG called his piece "A Never-ending Conflict." It's a double ouroboros, an old symbol of infinity, burned on basswood and finished with coloured pencil. They picked it because it fits "entwined" in two ways. You can see it literally in the two snakes wrapped around each other. But they also wanted it to say something about cycles and conflict. One snake is fire and the other is ice. In his words, they're opposites, and through their eternal conflict and the cycle of the seasons, they're forever entwined together in our consciousness.

When I first saw it, I loved the symmetry and the meaning behind it. The two snakes mirror each other, with one head at the top and one at the bottom, and every loop crosses over or under the other. It's the kind of piece you keep looking at and finding something new.

And then there's that background. JDG burned the whole thing with an old Versa Tool shader and just kept going until it was as dark as he could get it. That's a lot of patience, and very worth it! The deep black makes the orange and pale blue scales jump right off the wood. The rest of the club noticed too. Members commented on his colour choices, and on how the snakes twist so you see their backs in one spot and their bellies in another.
